Description

The professional selected for this role will lead the design of various research studies and evaluate programs at different stages of maturity and scale. They will collaborate with external research partners, the relevant program teams, as well as the data and knowledge sharing teams to plan studies that are purposeful, methodologically robust, insightful and substantive in informing program and system redesign and improvement. This is a managerial role and the professional selected will lead a small team.

  • Understand the problem of interest for each study in rich detail by engaging relevant stakeholders.
  • Map information needs (at an organization level as well as an individual discipline or practice-area level), identify issues, processes and outcomes of interest
  • Collaboratively develop logic models and theories of change with the relevant program or cross-functional teams. The incumbent will also play a critical role in designing the SOPs of research design to improve the quality of work and process across various studies happening concurrently.
  • Design methodologically robust studies that address the aforementioned information needs and can generate insights to guide further decision making in the areas / programs of interest. To this end, they will also look at the relevant literature, review how the research problem has been framed in various studies, the methodological choices taken, the thought frameworks informing these choices, to identify studies that can be used as benchmarks and are adaptable / transferable to TCF’s context and needs.
  • Work with external evaluators, where needed, to help design studies that are mission-aligned, and useful to both TCF and the various stakeholders (internal and external) who can learn from TCF’s experience
  • The Manager – Research Design will work closely, and with agility, with the leads of the Data Analysis and Knowledge Sharing units to jointly create research products that are ready for dissemination, and packaged for consumption by their various intended users / user segments.
  • They will work closely with the Administration and Research Support team to ensure that the researchers, evaluators, observers, moderators, data enumerators etc. are trained, understand the research instruments fully, and can capture rich, accurate and high quality data and insights from the field. They will also structure quality assurance mechanisms to oversee the quality of data collection.
  • They will develop a primer for research design decisions to identify what methods (quantitative and qualitative) and specific tools work best for which studies. They will also set mechanisms in place that allow for testing of tools and instruments for their validity and reliability ahead of their deployment in the study.
  • In order to develop useful findings from each study, they will work closely with the Data analysis unit to ensure that the analysis is as comprehensive and differentiated as the information needs demand, and reported in a manner that aligns with the expectations and engagement plans for various stakeholders within and outside of the organization.
  • Their work will be critical to continuous improvement and learning within TCF; therefore planning the next iterations of their studies and the next set of inquiries that can further organizational learning will be a huge value add that this role stands to bring.

 

Required Skills

  • System- and process-oriented thinking that can be transferred across research problems (regardless of practice areas)
  • Thorough academic grounding in mixed-methods research (professional experience would be of great value)
  • Attention to detail is a key attribute for this role, particularly as it is deployed in developing a thorough and nuanced understanding of research problems, design of programs and their outcomes of interest
  • Some grounding in education and socio-behavioral research
  • Inquisitiveness and Curiosity
  • This role requires a principled researcher, who prioritizes ethical considerations in research design, is sensitive to the cultural and contextual nuances applicable to the various geographies TCF operates in, and the diverse stakeholders it seeks to engage, and is willing to explore research problems from a variety of lenses including gender, justice etc.
  • Understanding of logic models, theories of change and how they feed into research design.
  • Some working knowledge of STATA or Python would be a plus.
  • Ability to present information in an insightful and structured manner, both written and oral
  • Excellent writing and communication skills

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Development Studies, Social Sciences or a proximal discipline

Experience

5 years of research and evaluation experience in the development sector, having leveraged both qualitative and quantitative methods in research. Prior research or practitioner experience in education would be a huge asset.
